Trained as a sculptor and painter Isah Shabaka has combined both experiences into an intense foray into fabric and fashion design. His work focuses on the African Diaspora and is informed by his analysis of their New World experience. A resident of New York for the last 22 years, Isha Shabaka was born in Jamaica and earned his BFA at Pratt Institute. His work has been exhibited in Jamaica, Canada and the United States.

"I am an idealist" proclaims Shabaka, "it is from that space that I approach the art making process, regardless of medium."

Whether reducing forms to one or a few essential characteristics, or layering color lines and forms to create new perspectives often disguising his themes; Shabaka is a creator with a purpose. In the past Shabaka's imagery sought to create a bridge between academic styles and aesthetic ideals connected to both Africa and Europe. Freely extrapolating aesthetic elements that he found appealing from either place, the paintings of Rembrandt and Rubens, the sculptures of Rodan and the body painting and decor associated with African rituals and celebration.
